Yet Another McCain Fiasco – Amnesty

LPJ reader, Joan Bartelson, sent me an email concerning members of Congress, one from her state, Dick Durbin, who is part of the “Halls of Shame” as described by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) of whom I subscribe. It concerns legislation and certain members of Congress, along with the White House, that is pushing for a guest worker amnesty program. The March 28th notice reads:

As you have undoubtedly heard, the Senate Judiciary Committee last evening approved an amnesty guest worker program modeled after the worst of all possible alternatives, the McCain-Kennedy legislation. Not to be outdone, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) successfully advanced an amendment to provide amnesty for some 1.5 million illegal alien agricultural workers. Incredible as it may sound, the Judiciary Committee took this action even as the Government Accountability Office (GAO was issuing a devastating report on border vulnerability to terrorism. The report revealed that its investigators had successfully smuggled enough nuclear material across the Mexican and Canadian borders to assemble two ‘dirty bombs.’ Even more incredibly, the GAO investigators smuggled their cargo not in some remote unguarded sector of either border, but through regular ‘secure’ border crossings. What follows is a short synopsis of the highlights of the Judiciary Committee bill approved yesterday:

Citizenship for Sale and for Free – General Amnesty – Graham (R-SC), Kennedy (D-MA) Amendment:

  • All 12 million currently residential illegal aliens would be permitted to apply for a work visa after paying back taxes and a $1,000 penalty.

  • The visas would last for three years and be renewable for three more years.

  • After the fourth year, these 12 million newly-minted legal aliens – their family members who will ultimately be permitted to join them pushing the numbers through the roof – would be permitted to apply for a green card setting them on a path for citizenship.

  • The measure was approved 12-5.

  • Those participating were: Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA), Sam Brownback (R-KS), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Mike DeWine (R-OH) who joined all Democrats by voting.

  • “Cowardly Lion Award” goes to Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) who was conveniently out of the room and did not vote.

Agricultural Worker AmnestyFeinstein (D-CA) Amendment
  • All 1.5 million illegal alien agricultural worker would receive a new “blue card” that would allow them to remain in the United States as long as they work in agriculture for a small portion of two years.

  • Following this period all of these 1.5 million newly-minted legal aliens – their family members who will ultimately be permitted to join them will at minimum double the numbers – would be permitted to apply for a green card, placing them on a path toward citizenship.

  • In a roll-call vote, it was approved 11-5.

The Kennedy (D-MA) Amendment
  • Provides 400,000 new guest worker visas per year.

  • New guest workers given renewable 3 year terms of work authorization.

  • Following 6 years, the new “guests” may apply for green cards, placing them in a position to become citizens if they can show they are learning English (that is a surprise prerequisite!) and pass background checks.

  • It was approved 11-6 in a roll-call vote.

Here is where Joan Bartelson feels she has been betrayed by Durbin (D-IL) because of his own amendment:
  • Repeals current law barring in-state tuition for illegal aliens unless the same benefit is made available to out of state residents.

  • This will effectively require middle and lower income Americans to directly compete with illegal aliens for limited freshman class seats at state colleges and universities.

  • It was approved by voice vote.

  • Makes overstay of a visa – 40% of all illegal aliens are visa violators and this amendment removes all criminal penalties.

The final bill was approved by the following: Arlen Specter (R-PA); DeWine (R-OH); Graham (R-SC); Brownback (R-KS); Leahy (D-VT); Kennedy (D-MA); Kohl (D-WI);Feinstein (D-CA); Feingold (D-WI); Schumer (D-NY); Durbin (D-IL).
Those who voted AGAINST committee approval: Grassley (R-IA); Kyl (R-AZ); Sessions (R-AL); Coburn (R-TN).
(NOTE: Senator O. Hatch (R-UT) did not vote because he was not present for the vote, so his name does not appear – even though he claimed that he was against it.)
After signing an open letter to Congress and signing a petition, the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill still passed a judiciary committee. This means they are going to provide illegal immigrants (criminals who broke a federal law) an opportunity to receive citizenship and all the benefits to go along with it. Why have immigration laws when the entity that made them doesn’t adhere to them?
When I went out of business, the IRS stated that I owed $500 for “self-employment” tax – which is a tax for the Medicare and Social Security programs. I wrote a letter stating how could I possibly owe money when I went out of business, sold/traded assets from that business, and still was paying business debts out of a wage earning (tax paying through payroll deduction) job’s pay in order to repay those business debts? That was a negative income that year. The most insulting thing is that the IRS did not respond to my letter of complaint and a request that those taxes not be required to be paid that year. Instead I received a notice that I would pay a penalty, interest and a late fee which by the time I was able to pay it off, totaled to just under $1,000. Now they want to allow illegal immigrants to pay back taxes with only a penalty of $1,000 – many of them being here for five, ten and twenty years?
This is a very bad piece of legislation. It must not get to President Bush to sign, because we all know how he feels about the “worker program.” And when Senator McCain (R-AZ) has his name on legislation, warning flags immediately appear; and to see Senator Kennedy (D-MA) co-sponsoring this, you know it has to do with getting 1.5 million votes and nothing to do with any “fairness.”
What a sweet deal for immigration law criminals! Fellow Americans, you need to keep track of those names aforementioned and make sure they do not hold public office any longer. Go back to selling insurance, being a lawyer or whatever they did before they made Congress the “Halls of Shame.” I have emboldened the names of the culprits for your convenience.
