Myth Blaster: Letter to Dr. White, NAACP

Quills, Iowa, supporter of humane treatment of animals, sent an email she received that concerns Michael Vick and the NAACP. The letter is dated August 18th, 2007, and was published at the Cry the Blues blog by Ernie Els

An Open Letter to the
Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP
Dear Dr. R L White, Head of the
Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP
My name is Mike. I am 27, and I am neither a member of your organization nor a resident of
Atlanta. Normally I wouldn’t bother you, but then I came across this article, and it compelled me to write.
Since I am white, I am going to tread carefully, so as not to offend your gentle sensibilities. But, Dr. White, you are a dumb ass. Speaking for white people everywhere, let me fill you in on something. This case was not a race issue. It was about killing dogs. And if there is one thing people don’t stand for, regardless of race, its killing dogs.
You compared it to deer hunting. Again, Dr. White, you are a dumb ass. When was the last time a deer greeted you at the door when you got home? Or curled up next to you and gently nuzzled in to take a nap? Dogs are pets, you moron. They aren’t meant to be killed for sport. The failure to make this distinction only makes you look more stupid. Sorry, I lost my temper there.
Here’s the thing, Dr. White. The reason people were outraged by this was because he killed dogs. If Ben Roethlisberger or Brett Favre had done it, the reaction would have been the same, I guarantee you. The difference is, had Ben Roethlisberger or Brett Favre done this, you would not see white supporters rallying behind him, proclaiming he was innocent in face of mountains of damning evidence, supporting him regardless of the outcome.
Allow me to let you in on a secret about white people: when one of our own makes us look bad, we condemn him and disown him. I suggest you adopt a similar policy. If your group’s mission is truly to advance “colored” people (your word, not mine), you’d disassociate from the idiots in your race. You can’t go wrong, trust me.
Anyway, Dr. White, I don’t want this to come off as racist, because it isn’t … Michael Vick is a despicable person who happens to be black. The sooner you realize that, the less of a dumb ass you’ll look like.
Sincerely, Mike

Myth Blaster Verdict: TRUE. Real letter. And the background of all of this is as follows …

Michael D. Vick is/was a member of the National Football League and starred as a quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons. His career has been suspended by the NFL because of his illegal dogfighting and gambling activities. He was part of a pitbull dog fighting ring and was indicted and plead guilty to felony charges, as well as being found guilty for unlawful interstate dog fighting. On September 26th of 2007 he was also found guilty of probationary violation for the use of marijuana based upon a September 13th test and was ordered to be confined in his home. On September 25th he was indicted by a Virginia grand jury for felony animal beating/killing and dogfighting charges and arraigned for October 3rd of 2007. All of this is nothing new because he was under investigation for possible dogfighting activities in 2001 – his parents stating he was staging dogfights in the family garage in Newport News. He was urged by his father not to continue such things, but did not listen. In 2004 Mike was arrested in Virginia for distributing marijuana. Yet he continued to play on the Atlanta Falcon team. In March 2005, Sonya Elliott filed a civil lawsuit against Vick claiming she contracted genital herpes in the autumn of 2002, and he failed to inform her that he had the disease. Elliot claimed that Vick knew of the disease because he was treated at clinics under the assumed name of Ron Mexico. November 26th, 2006, the NFL fined Vick $10,000 for making obscene gestures to fans. Vick paid the fine and agreed to donate another $10,000 to charity.
After Vick filed his plea of guilt, the NFL suspended him indefinitely without pay. The Falcons owner, Arthur Blank, is seeking to recover a portion of Vick’s signing bonus. He has also lost his contracts with sponsors like Nike and the Sports Business Group, as well as Rawlings. Vick is also involved with bank lawsuits in order to recover loans he had made and his cars have been repossessed. Press [August 23rd 2007] …

An NAACP leader believes Michael Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL, preferably the Atlanta Falcons, after serving his prison sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation.
“As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football,” said R.L. White, president of the NAACP’s Atlanta charter, yesterday. “We further ask the NFL Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country.”
White said the Falcons quarterback made a mistake and should be allowed to prove he has learned from that mistake.[1]
“Some have said things to save their own necks,” White said. “Michael Vick has received more negative press than if he had killed a human being.”
White added he does not support dogfighting, and that he considers it as bad as hunting. But NBA star Stephon Marbury thinks they are similar. …

[1] “Mistake” meaning he got caught, since he was asked by his father to stop doing it years before and he continued to not only remain involved in dogfighting, but illegal gambling as well. He also was involved with the use of illegal substance, Marijuana, and that alone could be a permanent suspension from the NFL.
